Mission & Goal
EDUCATION - RESEARCH - TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER
A multidisciplinary approach distinguishes all levels of robotics education at Georgia Tech. The College of Computing, College of Engineering and the Georgia Tech Research Institute play key, complementary roles through Tech’s traditional expertise in interactive and intelligent computing, control, and mechanical engineering. Emphasizing personal and everyday robotics as well as the future of automation, faculty involved with RIM@GT help students understand and define the future role of robotics in society. Educating and preparing engineering students for placement into robotics industry is an important goal of RIM.
Basic and Applied research is the heart of RIM@GT. The study of basic engineering problems in robotics is central to our work, but equally important is the integration of innovation and discoveries into real-world systems and applications. Coordinating robotics research through the RIM@GT focuses those efforts and promotes development of a unified research strategy. This is an important step toward our goal of becoming one of the world’s premiere robotics research institutions.
We understand the importance of addressing the industry's need for advanced research in robotics and automation. Industry plays a pivotal role to help RIM@GT keep a finger on the pulse of these evolving requirements. Most of the Center's research is project based, stemming from the problems identified by industry partners. RIM's primary focus: research that delivers world-class solutions to real-world problems - solutions that can be transferred directly to industry to satisfy specific needs. Throughout the entire research process, industry partners work hand-in-hand with Georgia Tech to help ensure that the direction of the project stays in focus and on track. RIM projects also shape future engineers for success, giving them the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience working with the same hardware and software the industry uses. With this specialized training, students leave the program empowered and equipped to make a real contribution in the highly competitive corporate environment.
