The U.S. Department of Education awarded the $37,462 grant to the College of Coastal Georgia, Georgia Institute of Technology's Savannah campus and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Gray's Reef Marine Sanctuary. Up to 12 science teachers from third through 12th grades will be selected to participate in the program July 5-7.
Fumin Zhang, Professor at Georgia Tech, said the teachers will attend a workshop to build small underwater robots that may be used in classroom settings or extracurricula activities for students. The robots will be tested in a large water tank at the Savannah campus of Georgia Tech. Underwater robots like these will inspire children and teenagers to develop future technologies to answer the grand challenges on environments and sustainability for the society.
